Enstar Group Limited announced that Cavello Bay Reinsurance Limited, its wholly-owned subsidiary, has entered into an adverse development cover reinsurance agreement with Markel Insurance, the insurance operations within Markel Group.

The agreement provides coverage for Markel's run-off global reinsurance portfolio and certain discontinued lines within its insurance operations for underwriting years 2025 and prior. Adverse development cover reinsurance protects carriers against losses that exceed initial reserves on historical underwriting years, typically used by insurers managing legacy books or exiting specific business segments.

Markel Group trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker MKL. The arrangement reflects ongoing consolidation activity in the reinsurance sector, where larger carriers routinely transfer tail risk to specialized run-off managers or reinsurers seeking to deploy capital into established claim portfolios.

Enstar has positioned itself as a significant participant in the adverse development and run-off reinsurance market, acquiring legacy portfolios and providing coverage solutions for carriers seeking to reduce balance sheet volatility. The Markel transaction adds to its existing book of business covering prior underwriting years across multiple lines.

The specific coverage limits, premium amounts, and retention levels were not disclosed. Such reinsurance agreements typically involve upfront or contingent payments tied to claims emergence over multi-year settlement periods.

The deal positions both parties to manage capital more efficiently—Markel by transferring uncertainty around historical claims development, and Enstar by adding a premium revenue stream backed by established claim history.
